Fans asked to wear Newcastle shirts at Cliffy Ahmed’s funeral
The family of Cliffy Ahmed had intended to have a small simple service to commemorate the loss of one of Newcastle United’s most devoted supporters.
However, they say that they have been ‘totally overwhelmed’ by the messages that they have received since Cliffy passed away last Wednesday.
So now the service has been opened up to all supporters who would like to attend, with the family requesting that if possible fans should wear Newcastle shirts in honour of Cliffy.
The service taking place next Wednesday (27 January) afternoon at South Shields crematorium.
A family spokesman told the Shields Gazette:
“We have been totally overwhelmed by the messages weve received for Cliffy, we had intended on a simple service, but that’s been taken out of our hands now.
“It would be nice if people wore NUFC shirts to the funeral, it would be fitting as Cliffy always had his on.”
When you talk about real characters who follow Newcastle United, Cliffy Ahmed was one of a kind. Home and away, Cliffy was there match after match, season after season.
He loved Newcastle United and it is so sad to see him taken from us at the age of only 57.
Reports over the weekend gave us an account of his final movements, with Cliffy going to the Manchester United match on Tuesday night and after watching his team fight back to a 3-3 draw, he then went to the Nine bar at St James Park for a celebration drink.
That was the last reported sighting of Cliffy Ahmed before he was then found later on Tuesday night next to the Strawberry pub, having suffered a cardiac arrest.
Taken to the RVI, Cliffy passed away on the Wednesday.
Family friend Chris Wood started a crowd funding appeal which gave Newcastle supporters the chance to help give Cliffy Ahmed a proper send off, the aim being to raise £500.
‘We’re raising £500 to give Cliffy Ahmed the send off he deserves because he was a devoted Newcastle supporter till the end.’
That initial target has been well and truly smashed with currently as I write at 6pm on Tuesday 19 January, already 108 Newcastle fans have donated a total of £1,264 – just showing what high regard Cliffy Ahmed was held in.
