Andros Townsend “Newcastle were the only club I wanted to join”

Andros Townsend has said that once he heard of Newcastle United’s interest, they were ‘the only club I wanted to join’.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Tottenham winger says that he can’t wait to play his first match at St James Park.

A £12m fee was confirmed as being agreed between the two clubs on Tuesday morning and the player clearly seems confident of agreeing personal terms, that is if they haven’t already been agreed.

The medical is scheduled to take place on Wednesday and assuming there are no complications, Andros Townsend would then be available for the Everton away match next Wednesday (3 February).

His first chance of stepping out at St James Park would be the following Saturday (6 February) when Newcastle host West Brom.

Townsend says that two of the best roles you can have in football are centre-forward and left wing at Newcastle, obviously having noted what the likes of Laurent Robert and David Ginola achieved at United.

It also appears to confirm that Newcastle and the player himself see his position as being left wing, rather than cutting in from the right as he has done when used by Spurs, on the rare occasions that has happened in recent times.

Andros Townsend speaking to Sky Sports:

“As soon as I knew of Newcastle’s interest they were the only club I wanted to join.”

“Two of the best positions you can play in football are centre-forward/left wing  at NUFC. I’ve got the chance – I could never turn that down.”

“I can’t wait to play my first game at St James Park, I’m excited!”
