Newcastle United aim to head off the latest attempt at giant killing when the young stars face Ilkeston FC in the FA Youth Cup.
Newcastle join at the third round stage but Ilkeston started their campaign over three months ago back in September.
Including three qualifying rounds, tonight’s opponents have come through five stages to allow them to grab this glamour tie against Premier League side Newcastle United.
Wednesday night sees Ilkeston FC’s Under 18s play in the biggest game of their careers so far, when they take on the Newcastle United Under 18s in the third Round of the FA Youth Cup at the New Manor Ground.
To give some idea of the gulf between the two clubs, the Ilkeston FC senior team play in the Northern Premier League where they are seventh, Blyth Spartans are currently top and Salford City, the team who Hartlepool beat in the FA Cup replay last night, are also at this level.
This was Ilkeston’s route to facing Newcastle United:
1st Qualifying Round
Ilkeston 5 Loughborough Dynamo 0
2nd Qualifying Round
St Andrews 0 Ilkeston 5
3rd Qualifying Round
Studley FC 1 Ilkeston 4
1st Round (Proper)
Ilkeston 0 Burton Albion 0 (Ilkeston won on penalties)
Ilkeston 4 Shrewsbury Town 1
Last season Ilkeston got as far as the second round proper but lost 1-0 at home to Accrington Stanley and missed out on a 3rd round tie with West Ham United.
The winners of tonight’s match will play AFC Wimbledon who defeated Watford last Friday.
Kick off at the New Manor Ground is at 7:45pm: Adults £3 Concessions £1 Under 16s Free when accompanied by an adult.
Well done to Ilkeston on reaching this far but fingers crossed that Newcastle’s young rising stars will do the business.
