Very strange choice of Newcastle player for Garth Crooks team of the week

By the final whistle there were possibly a few Newcastle contenders for the Garth Crooks team of the week but the BBC pundit came up with a very strange choice.

Rob Elliot was certainly one, having kept Newcastle in the game before the late revival.

Chancel Mbemba maybe another, doing well to stand up to the almost constant pressure in the first hour or so of the match.

Then we have substitutes Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez, the two players who dramatically changed the course of the match, handing defeat to Tottenham and bringing the three points home to Tyneside.

However, it was none of these who Garth Crooks picked out, instead it was…Gini Wijnaldum.

Our interactive fan player ratings currently show only three Newcastle players with a lower rating than the former PSV midfielder (view the current ratings HERE and add your own marks out of 10).

Wijnaldum has certainly been one of Newcastle’s best players this season, if not THE best, but it sounds like Garth Crooks has included him to help fit in with his patter…

The full Garth Crooks team of the week and then his write up on Gini Wijnaldum and Newcastle:

Joe Hart (Manchester City)

Allan Nyom (Watford)

Ryan Shawcross (Stoke)

Jonas Olsson (West Brom)

Leighton Baines (Everton)

Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal)

Gini Wijnaldum (Newcastle United)

Mesut Ozil (Arsenal)

Yannick Bolasie (Crystal Palace)

Joshua King (Bournemouth)

Olivier Giroud (Arsenal)

Garth Crooks on Gini Wijnamdum:

“Back-to-back wins for Newcastle United suggests the revival under Steve McClaren is official.

“The Magpies have been through some difficult times recently. However, it would seem that ex-England boss McClaren now has his players on side.

“Arguably their most influential player at the moment is Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman’s seven league goals have been invaluable this season, but against a disappointing Spurs so were his assists.

“The move that set up Newcastle’s winner was a beautiful lofted ball from Wijnaldum, when nothing else seemed on. A player with a lot of talent.”
