In the build up to Sunday’s match at White Hart Lane, Steve McClaren says that everybody at Newcastle United will be asking themselves whether they have really turned a corner after the two goal win over Liverpool.

The Head Coach admits that there has already been a number of false starts this season, even though the Premier League season in only 15 games old.

McClaren thinks the players are capable of building on Sunday’s three points but only last week he admitted that recently Newcastle had gone three steps forward, only to go five or six back.

Whilst there was still a struggle to create much going forward on Sunday, with only one shot on target. The team was unrecognisable in terms of effort/commitment, compared to the previous three games.

We keep saying that this one and that one is a pivotal game but this Sunday against Tottenham is definitely a…pivotal game. Not so much in terms of any expectation on the result but certainly any perceived lack of effort will have fans fearing the worst for the rest of the season.

Steve McClaren:

“That is the big question we will ask this week ahead of Tottenham – it is a tough away game, but this is what we are capable of doing.”

“We have had two or three false starts, where you think we’ve turned the corner and think: ‘We are up and running now’.

“I have said before we will take steps back, which we have done…big ones.

“Liverpool was a big one forward, let’s keep going now.
