Paul Merson predicts West Brom v Newcastle

Paul Merson has been having a look at the West Brom v Newcastle clash on Monday afternoon.

Saturday saw defeats for both clubs, with Newcastle cruelly losing in the final seconds to Everton, whilst West Brom suffered the same 1-0 scoreline despite finishing the game strongly against Swansea.

Paul Merson thinks it is going to be more misery for the Magpies as he has predicted another 1-0 scoreline, this time in favour of the Baggies.

Merson believes United’s players will be deflated after losing against Everton and will be unable to recover in time against a West Brom team who are amongst the most physical and hard working in the Premier League.

The former Arsenal star points to the fact as well that West Brom rarely lose to the sides towards the bottom of the league.

The stats bear this out in the campaign so far, with Tony Pulis’ team having beaten three of the bottom four (Norwich, Sunderland and Aston Villa) by a 1-0 scoreline.

Newcastle would represent a full set for them if defeated today, with it not leaving too much to the imagination as to the kind of games where West Brom’s survival is largely built on.

Only three clubs have scored less goals than West Brom, though none of the seven clubs below the Baggies have conceded less goals.

A tight encounter is very likely and whoever gets the first goal is very likely to win the match, so will Steve McClaren finally cast aside the all out defence that he appears to start every game with?

Paul Merson speaking to Sky Sports:

“Newcastle will be deflated after that devastating blow at home to Everton, and West Brom do not lose too many games against the sides in and around them.

“That’s what I like about them and I’m backing them to sneak a 1-0 win.”
