Newcastle fans on their way to today’s match at West Brom were given an escort out of Burton after making an unscheduled stop.
Rather than attempting to hand themselves in to the local constabulary to avoid watching today’s match, the United supporters were visiting McDonalds in the city centre.
The Police supervised the lunchtime stop-off as ‘a precaution’ and then escorted them out of town, with just under 30 miles remaining to the Hawthorns.
This is how the Burton Mail reported it:
‘Newcastle United fans were handed a police escort during a brief stop in Burton today.
Staffordshire Police were on hand as the Toon Army stopped off at McDonald’s, in Station Street, Burton, to enjoy quick bite to eat at 12.30pm before going to watch their team take on West Brom at 3pm.
Officers said the escort was as ‘a precaution’.’
The game finished West Brom 1 Newcastle 0 after appalling tactics from Steve McClaren and a really poor performance from the players.
