Tuesday brought news that Mike Williamson had been recalled from his loan period at Wolves, with the club claiming that this was simply due to Jamaal Lascelles having a hamstring problem.

Lascelles may well have an injury but that hasn’t prevented many fans and media from speculating that Williamson could go straight back into the team at the expense of Fabricio Coloccini.

The results of a poll on The Mag saw fans overwhelmingly voting (89% to 11%) for Coloccini to be dropped and Mike Williamson to play against Liverpool

On his return to St James Park, the defender has given an interview to the club’s own tv channel.

In the question and answer session, Mike Williamson says all the usual stuff about enjoying himself at Wolves and obviously getting regular football. Plus the form was decent with the defender helping his loan team keep three clean sheets in the five games that he played in.

However, watching his body language and the answers he gave, I get the impression that Williamson is expecting to play and if i’m reading it correctly, has actually been tipped the wink that he will indeed be in the team against Liverpool.

‘When did you get the call to tell you that you were coming back to Newcastle?’

“It was Sunday afternoon, the manager…we missed each other, he left a voicemail saying we might be calling you back and I got the phone call (to confirm) on the Monday – then (back in) training on Tuesday.”

‘You only just extended the loan in recent days, so was it a surprise?’

“Yeah, Jamaal (Lascelles) has got a bit of a problem with his hamstring so I suppose with that knowledge, no, but yes I was expecting to be there for the Christmas period and a couple of games in January.”

‘Played five and kept three clean sheets at Wolves, so is it a bit of a wrench to be coming back in some way?’

“Yes, I was really enjoying myself, it is a great club, players are very good – a real togetherness, and I like the manager who was fantastic – to work with him and learn from him.

“In a way I was enjoying it but if I’m going to come back to play, then this is where I want to be, in the Premier League.”

‘What do you think you brought to the Wolves defence?’

“They are a young group and a lot of potential there. I think I brought communication, a bit of experience. We were very solid and performances growing each game.”

‘Wolves are preparing for a trip to Rotherham at the weekend, bit of a contrast to Liverpool in the Premier League?’

“Of course. You want to be playing at the highest level you can and if that is the case then I am happy to be back.

“But like I say, my time at Wolves was fantastic, it was a good opportunity and it was a very good fit.

“A young group and my experience, I really got on well with the manager…so yeah, hopefully I can play on Sunday and it will be worth coming back.”
