Daryl Janmaat says it’s not Steve McClaren fault or lack of effort from players

Daryl Janmaat says that it isn’t a lack of effort by the players, or Steve McClaren’s fault, as to why Newcastle are in the relegation zone.

The United defender believes McClaren is a ‘top head coach’ who prepares the team ‘very well’ for each game.

As for the players, Daryl Janmaat thinks it is never effort that is lacking but rather confidence sometimes.

However, he does kind of contradict those two statements/beliefs with what else he says.

Janmaat thinks the difference against Liverpool was that the players pressed high up the pitch, so the question has to be why Steve McClaren didn’t have the team doing this against Leicester and Palace, also with Bournemouth who similarly dominated but on a day when Newcastle carried all the luck.

The Dutch international then says that against Spurs the players need ‘the same effort’ that they showed against Liverpool, with the intimation surely that there was something lacking in the effort in some of the previous matches.

It hasn’t been solely about results this season as to why fans have been unhappy, there has been a general belief that some players aren’t giving 100%.

Daryl Janmaat isn’t one of the accused and he is hardly going to name and shame any of his teammates but supporters make their own judgements.

The Tottenham game is important for so many reasons and fans will be paying close attention to not just the result.

Daryl Janmaat speaking to the Chronicle:

“We are behind him, he is a top head coach and does a good job, it’s not because of him that we have not played well.

“He prepares us very well for each game and it is about the players sometimes – but against Liverpool we gave the head coach a performance.”

It’s not the effort:

“It’s not the effort (that is lacking), it is the confidence. Everybody tries.

“It’s about how we play and against Liverpool we did really well, pressed high up the pitch and that was the difference – it is so important for us.”

Spurs:

“We can go to Tottenham feeling confident, last year we won there and hopefully we can beat them again.

“If we prepare well and focus we can do it and we have to do the same things we did against Liverpool – we need the same effort.”
