Only 5 clubs’ players have been England captain more times than Newcastle United’s
Alan Shearer as England Captain added a whole different dimension to watching the national team.
Even the most ardent anti-England enthusiast found it difficult at the time to not feel at least some pride in one of their own captaining the country.
One other player has captained England whilst at Newcastle, any guesses before you look below?
One (England Captain) who Newcastle fans were cheated out of seeing leading their country whilst also wearing the black and white of Newcastle, was Kevin Keegan.
Keegan arrived at St James Park as England Captain back in 1982, only for a certain (later to be Sir) Bobby Robson to do the dirty on both Keegan and the Newcastle fans.
At the time it was hard to tell who was most angry with Bobby’s decision – Keegan because he’d been dropped as both England captain and from the squad, or the United fans outraged on his behalf.
Only five clubs have seen their players pick up more England caps as captain in the entire history of England matches, Newcastle tie with Real Madrid in sixth place.
Manchester United are clear at the top but Sky Sports who compiled the stats appear to have ran out of fingers, as they declared Man Utd to have collected 123 England Captain caps, whereas in reality the players they list add up to 125.
123 Man Utd (Robson 65, Beckham 24, Rooney 14, Wilkins 10, Ferdinand 7, Charlton 3, Ince 2)
93 Wolves (Wright 90, Flowers 3)
90 West Ham (Moore 90)
86 Liverpool (Beardsley 1, Gerrard 38, Hughes 23, Keegan 7, Owen 6, Thompson 6, Clemence 1, Ince 3, Neal 1)
44 Chelsea (Terry 34, Lampard 8, Cahill 1, A Cole 1)
35 Newcastle (Shearer 34, Owen 1)
35 Real Madrid (Beckham 34 Owen 1)
***No Sunderland player has ever captained England.
