Newcastle defender ‘It is finally time to show my value on the pitch’

Newcastle defender Kevin Mbabu says that he is fit and ready for Bournemouth on Saturday and was only taken off on Monday night against Aston Villa reserves, due to worries for the management that he could also get injured, after Massadio Haidara was forced off in that 2-0 win.

Having watched the Stoke game from the sidelines, Kevin Mbabu thought the team played really well and deserved to win.

When  Daryl Janmaat came off with a knee injury he says he had mixed emotions, on the one hand thinking it was bad for the team but admitting he was excited that this potentially would give him another chance of playing.

The Swiss defender says that with this being his final year of the current contract, he told himself at the start of the season that he had to give it everything and remind the club why they bought him.

As a player who says he is comfortable in both full-back positions and who has impressed in his two and a half first team games so far, it looks a knocking bet that he is worth a new contract a lot more than certain other players who have been handed them.

He says he is ready to give the proverbial 200% when called upon and considering how the season has gone so far, he and a few others might have to give a little more than that…if the team are going to climb out of this current mess.

Kevin Mbabu talking to the club’s official tv channel:

“It (Stoke) was a great game and we played really well. We deserved to win because we had some great chances, the keeper made some great saves.”

‘What did you think when Daryl Janmaat came off injured?’

“On one side I thought it is bad for the team, on the other side I thought maybe ‘Oh my God, I might get my chance for the next game’. He (Janmaat) will probably start the game on Saturday but if anything happens it could be me coming on, or maybe Jamaal (Lascelles). I’ll be here, I’ll be ready.”

‘You have played at left-back so far (for the first team), do you still consider yourself a right-back?’

“I’m a full-back and I can play both sides well, I can also play centre-back.”

‘You came off against Aston Villa (reserves)?’

“It was just a precaution I think because Sadio (Haidara) got injured, so probably they don’t want another defender injured, so for precaution but I’m ok now.

“Before the season I was telling myself I only had one year on my contract left and I had to give it everything, show the club that they bought me for a reason – because I am a good player.

“I will always be motivated whether it is a Bournemouth, or Manchester City, or Chelsea. I will always give 200%.”

Kevin Mbabu has also spoken to the Chronicle:

“It has been a little bit crazy for me, I played three games, Sheff Wed, Chelsea and Manchester City, but I was injured at Man City. Now I am fit again.

“It is now my time to shine, I have had a lot of injury worries in the past and people weren’t too happy because I was always injured.

“Now I think it is finally time to show my value on the pitch.”
