Impeccably bad timing for these two Newcastle stars
As Newcastle United lurch from one disaster to another this season, it is sod’s law that even a positive occasion can be totally undermined by such unfortunate timing.
The north east football writers player of the year awards were presented on Sunday night, with obviously there always being a danger of changed circumstances when you are presenting an award for something that happened up to over a year ago.
As it happens, the two Newcastle players in question have actually once again been arguably United’s best two players this season so far.
However, to have the awards presented only 24 hours after the Crystal Palace debacle was just too bad (timing) to be true.
Daryl Janmaat won the main award but after just putting in arguably his worst ever performance, certainly as a defender (his work for our goal was excellent), it must have been pretty difficult to rouse any enthusiasm whatsoever to accept any ‘award’.
Ayoze Perez was named north east young player of the year and after the embarrassment of being the one hauled off at half-time at Palace, the young Spaniard must be wondering just how bad this season can get, despite his own relatively decent form when compared to most of his teammates.
The players of course have said all the right things and the following quotes were published on the official club website.
Janmaat is correct in stating that there have been some great winners in the past but when you are directly following on from Lee Clattermole then it reminds you just how bad things have become in the north east.
“It is a big thing for me, I always work hard and when you get something like this back, it is really nice.
“It is great for me and a lot of great names have won this award, like Shearer and Beardsley, some of the biggest names to have played for the Club, so I am really proud of it.”
“I am really proud, last season was my first year here and so to win this award is a big pleasure for me, I’m really happy to have won the award.”
