Aleksandar Mitrovic admits weight gain but says Newcastle are fine about it
Aleksandar Mitrovic was accused of being ‘overweight and sluggish’ when playing for Serbia and has now admitted he’s put weight on since arriving at St James Park.
Mitrovic says his weight went between 84 and 86kg when he was at Anderlecht and now he is up to 88kg.
However, he says that the weight loss is as a result of club orders to improve his ‘muscle mass’, so he can compete in the tougher Premier League.
The striker says that his fat is in ‘ideal proportions’ and this is ‘easy to check’.
“It is true that I have two kgs more now than when I came to Newcastle, but in the muscles.
“In agreement with the club working on muscle mass, because of the extra demands of the Premier League.
“In particular, my weight is always went between 84 and 86 kilograms, now I am 88kg, but that is what I wanted. The fat’s in the ideal proportions and it is easy to check.”
In the interview with ’Tens’ in Serbia, Mitrovic also clears up a couple of other issues when he was on international duty with Serbia this month.
It was claimed that the Serbian team manager had to step in to prevent Mitrovic and one of his teammates ‘coming to blows’, the pair said to be arguing over who was at fault for the first goal conceded in the 4-1 defeat against the Czech Republic.
“What conflict? It was nothing except the normal dialogue over where you should stand (to defend the corner). A normal conversation, like any other in the locker room when losing at half-time 1-0.”
There was also the issue of only seven players of the 22 man squad taking the team flight back to Belgrade the day after the match.
The other 15 players having made their own way home, including Mitrovic and three teammates heading off in a private plane straight after the game. With one of the four claimed to have been seen out on the town in Belgrade that night.
Mitrovic’s father said at the time that his son had done it so he could see family before having to head immediately back to Newcastle, something which Aleksandar Mitrovic has repeated in this new interview:
“Well, to tell you the truth, there is really no reason to dig the dirt. I went to Belgrade specifically so that I could spend a few hours with my girlfriend who is pregnant. We have not seen each other for a month ago and on Saturday morning I had to go to Newcastle. “
(***Wednesday night has also brought claims that Steve McClaren has confronted senior players because of a lack of effort and commitment for Newcastle United. Read it HERE)
