Alan Shearer to be honoured with road named after him
Alan Shearer will have a road named after him next month.
The Newcastle legend will officially ‘open’ the road at a special ceremony and is said to be ‘honoured and flattered’.
For Newcastle fans though, they will have to wait for a cup draw or promotion for Blackburn (or relegation for…United) before they can visit the new attraction.
The road in question being close to Ewood Park, the scene of Alan Shearer’s Premier League winning season.
Blackburn Rovers in collaboration with Darwen Council said they wanted to recognise the key role that Alan Shearer played in helping the club win the Premier League 20 years ago.
Shearer, who also played for Newcastle United, scored 130 goals for Blackburn Rovers, before heading home and adding another 206.
“My time playing for Rovers and also being part of the team that won the title, was an incredibly happy period of my life.
“I will always look back fondly on that time and the people that made it so special.”
The new road will definitely include ‘Alan Shearer’ in the name but the exact title hasn’t been revealed yet.
Councillor Phil Riley:
“Blackburn’s title win was a great achievement and made people across the world take notice of the town. Personally, it was one of the highlights of my life.
“The scale of the achievement cannot be understated. Only four others clubs, all of them big city teams, have lifted the Premier League trophy, so for a small town team in East Lancashire to win the title was a fantastic achievement.”
Are there any Newcastle players/managers past or present that you would like to have your street/road named after?
‘Ameobi Avenue’? ‘Pardew Parade’?
