Alan Shearer has a date at the seaside today, as he makes the short trip down to South Shields.

The Newcastle legend will officially open the new function rooms at the Northern League club’s Mariners Park, which is in Shaftesbury Avenue.

Alan Shearer will be at the ground from around 5.15pm, before unveiling a plaque at 6pm.

Following that, fans were due get a chance to see the stars of the future with Newcastle Under 15s taking on Sunderland Under 15s but the weather has put paid to that, with the pitch not being risked.

However, there is other entertainment on after the unveiling, including (one half of Twitter duo TaylorandBesty) guitarist and vocalist Taylor Payne performing.

South Shields FC are one of those leading the way in a buoyant non-league scene in the north east, with ambitious owners and board targeting a long-term dream of returning the club to the Football League.

A crowd of over 1,400 watched South Shields FC defeat Tow Law Town 9-1 on Saturday, with the club breaking the attendance record for Northern League Division Two.

This was a suitable reward for over 30 volunteers who responded to a pre-match call by the club to help make the rain ravaged pitch playable so the match could take place.

That victory made it 17 wins in a row as South Shields power on.

It is very hard not to draw comparisons between the great community spirit and connection with the fans that clearly exists at South Shield (and many other of our great non-league clubs), as compared to what we have under Mike Ashley at Newcastle United.
