What Bolton fans have had to say about signing Shola Ameobi…
Shola Ameobi has at last found a new home.
After wandering around the Championship on trial at Huddersfield, Wolves, Sheffield Wednesday, Bolton and Charlton, things were looking bleak.
In a buyer’s market with plenty of free agents about, all five clubs had said thanks but no thanks after Shola had trained with them.
However, Friday brought news that Shola Ameobi had at last struck a deal, a pay as you play arrangement with Bolton Wanderers who had originally rejected him.
Rock bottom of the Championship, only one win in 13 games this season, failing to score in eight of them – Bolton need something to inject new life into them.
Is that man Shola Ameobi?
The Bolton fans have been having their say, especially the possibility of lining up alongside 37 year old Emile Heskey.
This is a range of comments made to the Bolton News, when the story of Shola’s signing was announced:
‘Now that’s what you call desperation – can he be any worse than Heskey? Hope not.’
‘From the sublime to the ridiculous…34 years old….Ameobi n Heskey a strike force with a combined age of 71 years old…’
‘Just when you thought it can’t get any worse.’
‘Surprised they have not gone for Shearer or Lineker.’
‘I really hope this works but I would be surprised. It just shows how desperate we are – another ‘pensioner’ who was never a regular goal scorer in his prime (scoring an average of 1 goal in 6 appearances) and clearly not good enough for Wolves, Sheff. Weds or even Charlton.’
‘I’m thinking of offering my services. Like some of our recent recruits I could add height and weight up front (nothing else just height and weight), I have no pace or stamina with dodgy knees and back. Still at well past 30 (very well past) and costing only £1000 per game + free pies & chips I think I meet the standard for the type of player we are now in the market for.’
‘What the f***?? Lennon passed up on signing him when he trialled – why sign him now? Major signs of desperation.’
I’m willing to give him a shout though but let’s be honest…’
‘It’s a hard league… even harder when you sign players like this and EXPECT to climb the table.
The inevitable is coming, I’ve already accepted we are down.’
‘We really are now in a desperate situation, he is injury prone and not a very prolific goalscorer. Relegation here we come!’
‘Four clubs have passed upon the chance to sign him – this is for no reason. They properly know that he is 34, injury prone and not a prolific goal scorer.’
‘Pay as you play, while we PRAY as you play?’
‘A lot of negativity. I’m focusing on the positives. Them being, Ameobi has only had one season in the championship. He scored 10 goals in 18 games.
He’s younger than Heskey. He’s on pay as you play. So what’s the worst that could happen?’
‘I thought NL wanted a striker…53 goals in 14 years.’
‘Come to the macron, the soup kitchen for homeless footballers!’
