Newcastle United boss Steven McClaren sent a personal letter to the family of Chris Rice, a Newcastle fan who lost his life in a car crash near Killyreagh in County Down, Northern Ireland.

Chris died after a crash between a car and a tractor on Wednesday 7 October, his brother, Keegan, told Belfast Live that the family really appreciated receiving the letter from the United Head Coach.

Keegan Rice:

“We’d just like to thank Newcastle United themselves and it shows how much of a fantastic club they are for the respect that they’ve shown.”

In his letter, Steve McClaren offered his condolences, as well as paying tribute to one of Newcastle’s passionate fans in Northern Ireland.

Steve McClaren’s letter:

‘On behalf of the players and staff at Newcastle United, I send my sincere condolences following the tragic loss of your beloved Chris.

I understand Chris was a huge fan of the club, I hope we gave him some good memories over the years – I would imagine he also witnessed a few games that he would have liked to forget during that time too!

It’s the likes of Chris’ support that makes this team so special and we were proud to have him follow us and would like you to accept our gratitude, on his behalf, for his unprecedented support.

I hope Chris managed to get a few people around him in Northern Ireland to follow the Toon Army too and hope their support continues in his memory.

My thoughts go out to you all at this sad time and we send our best wishes for the future.’
