Sunderland 3 Newcastle 0 – Instant fan/writer reaction

Sunderland 3 Newcastle 0 Sunday 25 October 12noon

Sunderland: Johnson 45 (Pen), Jones 65, Fletcher 86

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle, to talk about some aspect of the match:

Ben Cooper:

“We played some good football today but you have to score goals when you are on top.

“For all the referee made a game-changing mistake today, we still had enough chances to win the game, even after the sending off.

“There were plenty of positives and we have to feel confident that we’ll finish above the mackems given the respective performances but we have to start winning games.

“That has to start on Saturday.”

Leazes Park Ender:

“Quite simply an horrendous day to be a Newcastle Utd fan. Six in a row lost now against that tin pot wannabe big city cheesey chipped shoulder brigade.

“We can talk all we like about the first half and the ref justice, but it’s yet another loss to this lot.

“McClaren wanted to be judged after ten games and the table tells us we’re in the bottom three.

“The club will have to back Mac but the pressure is well as truly back on.

“A bleak day.

“As for red Madely, or whatever he’s called, he can head south tonight fine. Newcastle fans are the ones who have to count the cost of his woeful decision. Richard Madely would have reffed the incident better.

“When will we win a derby? It feels like never o’clock at the moment I’m afraid.”

Paul Lyon:

“Punished for not scoring when on top.

“I’m not peeved by how we played. Daft pen, scored from their 1st corner, caught on the break when pushing for a goal with 10 men.

“Still hard to swallow.

“Dust ourselves off and crack on with getting as many points we can from the next 4.”

Nat Seaton

“Well what can you say?

“Captain Colo gave the opportunity for the ref to make a dubious decision, up until that point I was watching the action with a quiet smile on my face as all the action was at the other end of the ‘stadium’.

“A day to forget for sure.”

Jamie Swan:

“WTF just happened there?

“The lads were fantastic as far as I am concerned. Needed to score when we were on top.

“You can say Colo was using a shoulder charge but wasn’t shoulder to shoulder. Lopsided game, lopsided result.

“Bring on the return the SMB’s medicine is due.”

James Rutherford:

“When’s it’s 12 vs 10, what chance have you got?

“Totally dominant until the red card.

“Although I don’t think it was a penalty or a red, it was stupid from Coloccini. Gave the referee a chance which he was more than happy to take. “

Notts Toon:

“If I never see Sideshow Bob in a Newcastle shirt it will be too soon.”

Jamie Smith:

“Sick.

“The Coloccini decision was borderline but coming off the back of Cattermole clothes lining Wijnaldum in the opposite penalty area, there’s no doubt the referee has decided this game.

“Absolute travesty of a result.

“We played well in spite of the scoreline and we will kick on I’m sure. Need to take chances though.

“The Mackems have had their cup final and will go back to being sh***.

“Gutted.”
