Steve McClaren ‘Cheick Tiote is the kind of central midfield player that you need’

Cheick Tiote is the perfect central midfield player, according to Steve McClaren.

Whilst many fans suspect that the Ivory Coast midfielder is keen to be away and not bothered about playing, according to the Head Coach the player is ‘itching to play’ and has simply been unlucky with injuries.

Now back in training, it sounds as though Cheick Tiote has no chance of playing against Manchester City, but Steve McClaren thinks he could be fully fit in a couple of weeks, potentially in time for Sunderland on 25 October…

McClaren once again dismisses the idea of Cheick Tiote as a ‘bad egg’ but certainly Newcastle fans would be reasonable in suggesting that many of his most recent performances have smelt like one.

It is a long time since Tiote was both fit AND in form, with centre of midfield an area that is open to a lot of improvement, it remains to be seen whether Steve McClaren does indeed show faith in the midfielder and if so, whether he delivers.

Steve McClaren:

“He keeps having little niggles, he has got to get consistent and be ready to play.

“This fortnight coming up is huge for him as we want to see Cheick fully fit and ready to play.”

My type of player:

“He is the type of Premier League central midfield player you need, he fits that bill.

“It has been one of my biggest frustrations not seeing Cheick on the training field often enough.”

Eggs:

“Good to see him back, ‘bad egg’ and all that, as I said last week, what a load of rubbish.

“There’s no better competitor or trainer out there than Cheick Tiote. I know him from being a kid.

“He is itching to play but you have got to be ready, he has trained for three days this week with the team.”
