Shola Ameobi set to sign shock deal and play tomorrow

Shola Ameobi is set to accept a shock deal offered by Bolton Wanderers and is tipped to go straight into their team tomorrow and face Leeds United.

Ameobi was on trial at Bolton earlier this month but Neil Lennon at the time said despite Shola doing ‘very very good’, he didn’t think he was better than what they had at the club, including 37 year old Emile Heskey.

This failed trial at Bolton followed earlier ones with Huddersfield, Sheffield Wednesday and Wolves.

After the Bolton knockback, Shola Ameobi then went to Charlton Athletic, but the outcome was the same with no deal offered to the 34 year old free agent.

However, the Bolton News report that Wanderers have had a change of heart, no doubt brought on by only one win in 13 matches this season, including failing to score in eight of them.

They say that Shola has been offered a pay as you play deal until the new year, with the striker ready to accept and make a shock debut tomorrow against Leeds.

Shola Ameobi has not played any football since leaving Crystal Palace at the end of last season and even then he only made four brief substitute appearances totalling 38 minutes in the Premier League.

Charlton Athletic had their doubts over how long it would take for Shola to gain ‘match sharpness’…

There is now the potential enticing possibility of an 81 year old partnership of Shola Ameobi and Emile Heskey lining up for Bolton.

It will be very apt if Shola returns to action only hours before Newcastle travel to Sunderland, the derby matches being Shola Ameobi’s biggest legacy at Newcastle United.

This is what Neil Lennon had to say after the original trial:

“We are still looking to find a player or two, just to add to what we have already.

“You want to get it right. We felt Shola was similar to Emile Heskey and Gary Madine.

“Although he did very, very good, finances are tight here so we want to make sure we’re spending the money on the right player.”
