Misery for Wijnaldum

It was misery for Georginio Wijnaldum as he and his Dutch teammates finally confirmed they won’t be in France next summer.

Or if they are, it won’t be to compete in the finals of the European Championships…

A chaotic qualification campaign ended in a bizarre game on Tuesday night, a fitting way for the final blow to be delivered.

In front of their own fans, Holland imploded and conceded two first half goals before the Czech Republic had a player sent off just before the break.

Rather than this inspiring the Dutch, they somehow contrived to go further behind thanks to an own goal by substitute Robin van Persie.

However, then they somehow found a couple of goals from Huntelaar and van Persie (at the right end), which with seven minutes left a spectacular almost in prospect.

With the scores still level in Turkey, if Iceland scored and Holland found another two goals against 10 man Czech Republic, they could still make the play-offs.

However, that was the end of the goals in Amsterdam and Turkey took care of their own business with a goal in the final minute.

Vurnon Anita watched proceedings from the bench as Wijnaldum completed the match.

A bit of a disaster all round for Newcastle’s five Dutch players, with of course Tim Krul the one to suffer most in this latest international break.

Earlier today Paul Simpson said they were hopeful of Daryl Janmaat being fit for Sunday which to most of us is far more important than how the Netherlands get on.

However, let’s just hope Newcastle’s Dutch contingent can refocus that disappointment and start collectively doing it on the pitch for United.
