Inspired selection of Newcastle team v Sunderland

Here is my inspired selection for the Newcastle team v Sunderland.

With the injury situation improving, Steve McClaren as a number of choices to make and in my opinion, keeping the same eleven that beat Norwich 6-2 is NOT an option.

I think the Head Coach has to be brave, Newcastle won last weekend despite a number of glaring weaknesses.

The first decision he needs to make is actually not a change. I would keep Cheick Tiote in the team despite a very shoddy 45 minutes against Norwich.

Tiote surely can’t be that bad again and should be in better condition after another week’s training, with the likes of Cattermole facing United we need somebody to match fire with fire.

The flipside of picking Cheick Tiote is that in reality there aren’t any other options, Vurnon Anita is far too weak for matches such as this and has shown this to be the case in the past when playing the mackems.

At left-back it has to be Massadio Haidara, he is simply the best left-back at the club, though that isn’t exactly difficult with it being NUFC’s weakest position by far.

However, I WOULD pick Paul Dummett, only it would be at centre-half.

When given the chance, the Geordie defender has proved to be Newcastle’s best centre-back, at least he was until the arrival of Chancel Mbemba. A poor left-back, Dummett is far more suited to the job in the middle.

Sunderland are sure to be targeting Newcastle’s soft centre with crosses and long balls, something that Coloccini is incapable of dealing with these days. Dropping your captain is a big call but better to do it before potential disaster, rather than acting afterwards.

Against the likes of Watford, Swansea and West Ham, Coloccini has been shocking, time for a fresh look to the defence and what I believe represents the best we have available.

Other than these decisions above, the rest of the team picks itself as follows:

To create the image above I used the NUFC team selector.

You can do the same by following the simple instructions HERE and then there are a number of great options where you can then also share your team via Twitter (include @nufcthemag in your tweet and we will share some of them with our 16k+ followers) , or you can share the selector on Facebook with friends, family and the rest of the black and white world. Alternatively, simply downloading the team image to the device you are using

When using the NUFC team selector you simply click on what team formation (4-3-3, 4-4-2 etc) you want, then click each position on the pitch and choose from the Newcastle United squad.

Go to the NUFC team selector now and choose and share your Newcastle team v Sunderland.

Before every match, simply go to the menu at the top of this screen and click features, then on the drop down list click NUFC Team Selector and choose your team for every match.
