Bolton Wanderers have released an official statement on Friday afternoon confirming that they have signed Shola Ameobi.

This followed reports earlier today that the 34 year old free agent was due to sign a pay as you play agreement that would take him up to the new year.

Those earlier reports suggested that Shola could make his debut as early as tomorrow afternoon when Bolton play Leeds at home.

Rock bottom of the Championship, Bolton have failed to score in 8 of their 13 matches (all competitions) and have won only one game all season.

A new strike force could now be unleashed on the world, with Shola Ameobi possibly lining up alongside Emile Heskey, the former England player who turns 38 in January.

Nigeria international pens short-term at Macron Stadium following recent trial

Bolton Wanderers have completed the signing of Shola Ameobi on a short-term deal.

The Nigeria international joins the club on a free transfer having recently spent time on trial with the Whites.

Most recently on the books at Premier League side Crystal Palace, the 34-year-old enjoyed a brief stint in Turkey with Gaziantep BB last season having spent the majority of his career with Newcastle United.

A member of the Newcastle side that won the Championship in 2009/10, the forward also previously enjoyed a loan spell in the second tier with Stoke City during their 2007/08 promotion-winning campaign.

Formerly an England Under-21s international, he was a member of the Nigeria squad that reached the knockout stages of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, making two substitute appearances as the Super Eagles suffered a second round exit.

Ameobi will wear the number 26 jersey for the duration of his stay at Macron Stadium.
