Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger never really agreed on anything but now Kath Cassidy has seen them joining forces to wish her the best of luck on her retirement.

Escaping Newcastle United at the age of 88, Kath is retiring as tea lady at the club.

Having worked at the club since 1963 there have been a few ups and downs for the team in that time but of the managers, she picked out two for special mention when the Chronicle interviewed her:

“Kevin Keegan was a real favourite, he was as good as gold. He always had two sugars and he made everyone happy.

“I think if Kevin was still there we would have all been happy.”

“Alan Pardew was a gentlemen too. I think he was the perfect manager for Newcastle, the fans were disgraceful to him.

“When they were playing abroad he sent me silk flowers because I was ill.”

There was an illustrious cast queuing up to wish her well, amongst them:

Alan Shearer

“Thanks, Kath. Everyone knows that two things make a football club – the fans and the tea lady – and we had the best of both.

“Always there with a kind word and friendly smile, it won’t be the same without you. Good luck in your retirement.”

Sir Alex Ferguson

“Enjoy your retirement Kath. Serving tea to the media cannot be an easy job so you well and truly deserve a long and happy retirement!”

Arsene Wenger

“Dear Kath. I understand you are retiring after more than 50 years’ service to Newcastle United.

“On behalf of everyone at Arsenal, we send you our best wishes for your retirement. Your loyalty and commitment is absolutely outstanding and is rightly being acknowledged by many in football.

“Here’s to your health and happiness.”
