Andrea Ranocchia is a January target for Newcastle United according to reports in Italy this morning.
The Italian international centre-back has gone from being captain and first choice at Inter, to seemingly fourth choice now.
The 27 year old moved to Inter five years ago from Genoa for around £10m and has been a mainstay in the heart of the defence in recent seasons.
Inter were ambitious in the summer transfer window and have a whole new centre-back pairing of Jeison Murillo who was purchased from Granada, along with Joao Miranda who arrived on an initial loan deal from Atletico Madrid.
Manager Roberto Mancini has also favoured former Cardiff midfielder Gary Medel as a next choice alternative to his favoured centre-back duo.
Ranocchia on the other hand has not started a single league match this season and has only made a a handful of late substitute appearances.
If Andrea Ranocchia wants to have any chance of featuring for Italy in next summer’s Euros he needs first team football and Italian media outlet Premium Sport claim that Newcastle United are interested in taking the defender in January.
They report that Spurs and Everton are also interested parties but that Newcastle are leading the proverbial race. AC Milan are also credited with interest but it is very unlikely that Inter would sell to their big rivals.
Barring injury there looks no chance of Ranocchia winning his place back, with Inter riding high in second place in Serie A and only six goals conceded in seven matches, with Davide Santon at right-back alongside the new look central defence.
At 6ft 5 Andrea Ranocchia is seen as commanding in the air and this is something that Newcastle certainly need.
Whether Mike Ashley would sanction buying a second centre-back within six months remains to be seen, though an initial loan could be possible.
With 34 yellow cards over the last three seasons, Ranocchia isn’t shy of getting stuck in either, though with three months until the January window opens, we are surely set to see Newcastle linked with plenty more players before the new year arrives.
