The answer to the creativity gap at Newcastle United

Five league games, two goals and a lack of creative flair in the team has left us bottom of the league. With West Ham away showing us just how bad our attacking threat was, with only Daryl Janmaat offering any sort of attacking option – that was until the arrival of both Perez and Siem de Jong.

Now Perez took the plaudits from most TV pundits as he actually offered a glimpse of a threat from Newcastle but as I sat behind the goal thinking about my journey home, after another London defeat, my attention was taken by Siem De Jong.

He was drifting into space looking for the ball and actually looking to pass the ball forward, unlike a few others on the night. His style of play reminds me of Dennis Bergkamp and I believe he is the man to create and maybe score the goals to get us into the top half of the league table.

Now before I get jumped on by everyone, I know we lost 2-0 and yes he is prone to an injury or two, but at least he was trying to get us on the front foot and actually looked like he wanted to be on the pitch.

It also looked like he took charge of the warm-up pre game with the substitutes, suggesting he has the leadership abilities we have been lacking on the pitch.

My team vs Watford would be:

Janmaat, Memba, Colo, Haidara

Colback, Gini

Aarons, De Jong, Thauvin

Dropping Sissoko would a big sign of intent from Steve McClaren and show Sissoko that he actually needs to earn his place in the team rather than just be an automatic pic every week. It would also allow Siem De Jong to play in the free role behind the striker and offer out and out width with Aarons and Thauvin on either wing.

The confidence a win would give against Watford especially to the new boys could hopefully be the sign of better things to come.
