Sunderland hit rock bottom: Newcastle could rise to 14th and above Chelsea
Sunderland have hit rock bottom again after their latest defeat.
Tottenham’s win on Sunday afternoon has sent the Wearsiders into bottom place in the Premier League.
In a match that was almost devoid of quality or chances, it took Spurs until the 77th minute to get their first shot on target.
Five minutes later Ryan Mason produced a rare piece of excellent play and scored the winning goal for the visitors.
Newcastle are 18th with Stoke separating the two north east clubs, all three on two points.
However, United could end up in 14th place (if Villa don’t win today) on Monday night if they can find their first away win in eight months.
On the other hand, defeat by three or more goals would see Newcastle replace Sunderland in bottom spot.
Steve Harper was working for Radio 5 Live covering the Sunderland v Spurs encounter and had this to say:
“There’s been a real lack of quality in the final third for both teams today and the one real piece of quality gets the goal.
“Ryan Mason showed intelligence to run into the gap and kept his composure to chip the goalkeeper.
“The decisions in the final third have been poor. Both teams picking the wrong options.
“It’s all just a bit static and slow getting support into the box, and passes are being set back, crosses are coming in but there’s nobody there – for either side.”
