Steve McClaren press conference ‘We need better football, more chances and more goals’

Steve McClaren has challenged his players to come up with three simple things against West Ham.

The Newcastle Head Coach said at his press conference on Friday afternoon that he is looking for:

Better football

More Chances

More goals

McClaren says that the last two weeks have been frustrating as he believes that despite no wins in the Premier League so far, he thinks that a platform has been built for Newcastle to build from.

He also revealed that despite initially saying they would definitely appeal, he and the club had to accept that an appeal on the Mitrovic red card was ‘pointless’.

Steve McClaren says the short pre season has handicapped all clubs and that nobody is yet playing at 100%.

Let’s hope his players get closer to that figure on Monday night than they have so far.

Steve McClaren speaking on Friday afternoon at his pre-West Ham press conference:

“We need the breaks (v West Ham) and we need to play better football, create more chances and score more goals and the results will come.

“It (start to the season) has been frustrating. We have built a platform, we’ve seen evidence of that but we’ve been down to ten men in two of the four games. We have got a good spirit – that’s what we learned.”

Transfer window:

“We breathed a sigh of relief (when transfer window closed) so glad we did what we did.

Mitrovic appeal:

“We felt an appeal (on Mitrovic red card)would be pointless and it is a lesson for him. We have got good options though.”

Frustration:

“The break has been frustrating. You want the games to come thick and fast. We have not shown our quality yet.”

“We’ve defended well, shown great spirit, and the players have taken that atmosphere on. I think the fans have appreciated that.

Short pre-season:

“The short pre-season hasn’t been good for all teams. No team is firing at 100% yet. Nobody is at that level of consistency.”
