Steve McClaren goes all Bruce Forsyth…’Didn’t he do well’

Steve McClaren went all Bruce Forsyth when asked to sum up Kevin Mbabu’s display on his Premier League debut.

The Head Coach admitting they had little choice but to throw the Swiss defender in against the Champions as they had no recognised left-back available.

The McClaren verdict being ‘Didn’t he do well’!

The United boss also believes that the fans played a big part in Mbabu’s excellent performance, saying that the crowd could have waited to see how Kevin Mbabu woulkd get on, but instead the were big in their support of both the stand-in left-back and the team as a whole, from the first whistle.

McClaren said that they didn’t want to disrupt the rest of the defence and needed Mbemba in the middle, comments that repeated what Paul Simpson said before kick-off yesterday.

It will be interesting to see who is fit for Manchester City and then who the Head Coach picks from those available.

There then follows (yet another!) international break when there will be time to get other players back and for Steve McClaren to reflect on the state of play so far….

Steve McClaren asked by club interviewer: ‘Have you seen something in Kevin Mbabu that others haven’t?’

“I have seen a certain amount of composure but we have got no left-back!

“We didn’t want to take Chancel Mbemba out of the middle because he and Colo are vital in these games, which they were.”

Up against Pedro:

“So in all these cases we throw a kid on and didn’t he do well!

“What a game, against Pedro, you are a little bit worried but he handled it and I thought the crowd were fantastic.

“A big plus when you have new players and they are looking, the crowd, they could very easily come here and just wait to see what was going to happen but they didn’t, they started from the beginning and we grew because of their help.”
