Newcastle Coach ‘To beat Manchester United at any level is a great achievement’

The first team might have had the weekend off but Newcastle’s young up and coming stars had a fantastic result against Manchester United.

A hat-trick from Lewis McNall saw him win the three points for the Newcastle Under 18s and the match ball, though a 3-0 comfortable victory became a frantic final few seconds as the visitors scored two very late goals.

All three goals for the home side were delivered from the right hand side by Callum Smith onto the head of McNall, with coach Dave Watson ecstatic after the match.

Dave Watson talking to the official club website:

“It’s great to see our striker (Lewis McNall) score a hat-trick with his head and it shows just how good our delivery and distribution was.

“Overall, I thought we were fantastic. For 85 or so minutes we pressed really well and stopped Manchester United from playing by not giving them any time on the ball.

“We know teams like Manchester United can hurt you if you give them time and space so the fact that we stopped that just goes to show how well we did.

“We showed real quality on the ball and our energy levels were excellent for the majority of the game.

“We’ve got a very young side but Dan Ward and Jack Hunter coming back from the under-21 squad gave us a big boost as they were excellent in the middle and their experience rubbed off on the rest of the team.

“Perhaps we should have killed the game off better than we did but to beat Manchester United at any level is a great achievement.

“It’s been a good learning curve for the lads and hopefully they can push on from here.”
