Moussa Sissoko says Newcastle have to learn

After playing two out of the last three Premier League matches with 10 men for most of the game, Moussa Sissoko says that Newcastle United ‘need to learn’.

The French midfielder says the players have to be more careful with their tackles and try to keep 11 men on the pitch.

It was actually Moussa Sissoko who set Andre Marriner on his way on Saturday, his third minute booking set the trend. Although after the game many people thought maybe with the referee’s card happy performance that Sissoko had got off lightly, with his challenge not dissimilar to that of Mitrovic.

The French midfielder’s comments are perfectly timed as it is West Ham up next, the scene of one of two senseless red cards for Moussa Sissoko last season, the other being at Liverpool.

With five red cards in Newcastle’s last seven away games, something drastically needs to change and all players need to take responsibility.

Yes Andre Marriner was more than happy to dish the cards out but once Mitrovic was red carded, you have to admit that the team were hyped up and particularly in the remainder of that first half, you could see they were sailing close to the wind with intent in their challenges.

Great to feed off the intensity of the occasion and the crowd but as we saw last season, suspensions badly hit the team and the loss of Papiss Cisse in particular for so many games, was almost the final straw in terms of getting relegated.

Ironically, in Mitrovic’s absence, Cisse will now be back centre stage at Upton Park.

With seven bookings and two red cards, nobody had a worse disciplinary record than Moussa Sissoko last season, let’s hope he takes notice of his own words and leads by example.

Moussa Sissoko

“When you play 10 v 11 it is hard and when you play against a big team like Arsenal then it is too hard.

“We tried our best and we showed some good things – defensively very good.”

Have to learn:

“We have to learn about this game and to be careful with tackles and fouls, try to stay with 11 and win the game.”

“You can see we tried to play more and create some good movement and chances but it was hard,  hopefully after the international games, we’ll show some good things and get a result.”
