Tuesday brought news that Deportivo La Coruna had reached agreement with Jonas Gutierrez to join them.
The deal though was dependent on the former Newcastle player passing his medical and on Thursday Jonas flew in from Buenos Aires.
On touching back down on Spanish soil, the player went straight for his medical at the HM Modelo Hospital and on Friday morning it has been confirmed that Jonas Gutierrez passed that without any problem.
Jonas has been training with his old club Velez Sarsfield but after signing a one year contract, Gutierrez revealed that he wanted to have the chance of at least one more season playing in Europe.
“I had options to play in Argentina but I always said that my wish was to play another year in Europe.
“For the time being it is just a one year contract but I will take it one day at a time.
“I don’t want to think about next season, I just want to give 100% to this opportunity that I have been given.”
The transfer window closed on Monday in Spain but as a free agent, 32 year old Jonas Gutierrez was able to sign for the La Liga club outside that summer window.
Needless to say but all Newcastle fans will wish Jonas the very best of luck and it is a pleasant surprise that the one-time Newcastle winger/midfielder has landed a move back to La Liga.
Newcastle signed the Argentine international back in 2008 from Real Mallorca and he became out of contract at the end of June this year.
It was no surprise when Jonas Gutierrez had no further contract offer, as regardless of whether he was good enough or not, he had been the architect of his own destiny after publicly criticising his treatment by Alan Pardew and Mike Ashley when dealing with testicular cancer.
This didn’t excuse the shameful way the club handled his eventual exit, with Jonas officially been told he was no longer wanted at the club when John Carver rang Ryan Taylor to tell him he was finished at Newcastle, before then bizarrely asking him to pass the phone to Gutierrez and telling him he wasn’t wanted either.
At the time the two players said they felt sorry for John Carver, as he was clearly uncomfortable with the manner of delivering the news, the belief being that he was under orders from those above to do it in this shambolic way.
Jonas Gutierrez joins the club that Fabricio Coloccini moved from for over £10m back in 2008, when he arrived at St James Park.
