John Carver points out Steve McClaren’s biggest mistake

John Carver has given his view on Steve McClaren at Newcastle United and believes that from what he has seen, the new Head Coach doesn’t know his players well enough yet.

As an illustration of this, Carver says he couldn’t believe that McClaren entrusted Vurnon Anita with a man-marking role on West Ham’s star player, Dimitri Payet.

A move that spectacularly backfired with Payer scoring both goals in a man of the match performance.

John Carver appearing once again as a guest on beIN Sports after his weekend stint with Kevin Keegan:

“Steve McClaren doesn’t know the players well yet – I was surprised he gave Anita a man-marking role.”

Meanwhile, Alan Shearer wasn’t holding back on what he’d seen unfold at Upton Park.

The former Newcastle striker saying that the black and whites would have been better off with 10 men, rather than having Papiss Cisse in the team.

Shearer thought Florian Thauvin was little better and as a team, Newcastle totally failed to match the hunger shown by West Ham.

Also on beIN Sports, Alan Shearer:

“I looked at Cisse and thought Newcastle would have been better with 10 men. And it’s not just Cisse, Thauvin showed nothing.

“There wasn’t enough hunger from Newcastle to win. West Ham had more drive and pace.

“At no point did I ever think they Newcastle would win.”
