Today Lee Bowyer has given his view on Newcastle United’s start to the season, talking about the new signings, Steve McClaren and what he saw when he attended the Arsenal match at St James Park.
Whether by accident or design, Bowyer’s interview on Talksport followed one on the same radio station at the weekend, with his old ‘fight club’ teammate Kieron Dyer.
When Dyer had his say, he unbelievably pointed his finger at the Newcastle fans as being the key factor in United’s poor start to the season.
“When it is not going so well it can be a very unforgiving place, the fans can turn very quickly.
“The players are going out on the pitch knowing that if there is a wayward pass, there are going to be groans, which I think sums up Newcastle at the present time. The players have got no confidence and it is showing in the results.”
Then we come to Lee Bowyer.
One thing you can say about him is that he does seem to have a better understanding of the Newcastle supporters. Bowyer saying he was up for the Arsenal match and praised the crowd’s contribution despite the loss.
However, when it comes to the Newcastle players, Lee Bowyer is less forgiving. The one-time United player stating that against Watford the team didn’t give it the proper effort, saying that this is all the fans are looking for and will forgive pretty much everything else.
On the other hand, Bowyer does seem to be a little out of touch with what happened whilst John Carver was in charge….yes the players were rubbish for him but you can’t absolve him of all blame for leading Newcastle to their worst ever losing run in the league in the club’s entire history!
Lee Bowyer talking to Talksport:
“It just shows you that the criticism John Carver was getting last year was unjustified – you can only work with the squad you have got.
“Steve McClaren has bought in some of his own players and one or two of them do look ok – but to bring in more foreign players when you already have loads there… it is a tough league to hit running and not a lot of players do get it.
Get it right in the end:
“It is just a tough time for Newcastle at the moment but I do think that McClaren will get it right in the end.
“Hopefully the crowd will stay behind them because they will play a big part in their success this season.”
All the fans ask for:
“If the players work hard and graft and you walk off the pitch having given 100%, then that is all that they ask for. I was there when they played Arsenal and every player gave 100% and the crowd applauded them off.
“They don’t mind so much if they lose, obviously they would rather win, but it is the effort that they want from their players – this weekend that didn’t happen though.”
