Diego Costa has managed to dodge a date with Aleksandar Mitrovic on Saturday.
Many people were no doubt relishing a meeting of the Chelsea striker, who is seen as the established ‘hardman’ of the Premier League, and the young pretender from Serbia.
However, Costa has been hit with a retrospective three match ban following his antics last weekend against Arsenal, so will miss the match at St James Park.
It is poetic justice because Diego Costa was the main instigator of the trouble at Stamford Bridge but suckered Arsenal’s Gabriel into a soft red card.
Aleksandar Mitrovic may have his faults but at least his is an honest game, picking up cards for putting himself about and lacking the maturity at the minute to stay the right side of the line.
Whereas, whilst Diego Costa can dish it out, it is embarrassing to see how pathetic he can be when on the receiving end, summed up by waving an imaginary card on Saturday to try and get an opponent booked.
It would have been an interesting aside to see Mitrovic and Costa marking each other on corners and set-pieces on Saturday but I have little doubt there will be more chance of a cleaner/fairer game without the Chelsea striker’s presence.
Let’s hope our centre-forward has got his head right whilst suspended, because there is now an incredible amount of responsibility on his young but broad shoulders, with some of his teammates visibly crumbling under the pressure.
