Alan Shearer gave a damning verdict on Newcastle United’s performance in East London on Monday night.
The United great and Newcastle fan, spoke for the rest of us when he said that only one team wanted to win last night.
Not being able to get to the match last night, I was watching it with my mates in the pub.
What Shearer had to say, simply summed up what we were all saying as we watched the match unfold.
West Ham appeared to have more desire, were quicker to the ball, quicker on the counter-attack and simply more up for it than Newcastle.
That is all before we get to whether Newcastle’s players are good enough, which is only something we’ll find out about further on in the season, not after this latest defeat or the failure to win any of the first five matches.
However, Alan Shearer did point to a growing problem that is a massive cause for concern.
Alan Shearer on Twitter:
“Only one team wanted to win this game and they did. Very poor from NUFC Well done WHUFC.
“One shot on target in the last month for NUFC and today is no better in the final third.”
Yes Newcastle have had a relatively tough run of opening games this season and the two red cards haven’t helped BUT to have no shots on target at all in the Manchester United and Arsenal matches, plus only one or two feeble ones against Swansea, wasn’t great to see.
Against West Ham it was more of the same in the final third as Shearer points out, with probably the one real chance being when at 1-0, Daryl Janmaat hit a weak left foot shot at the keeper from only six or seven yards out.
