Alan Shearer savages Newcastle United after no show

After the latest no-show by Newcastle United’s players, Alan Shearer has really laid into the team’s shortcomings after six matches of the new Premier League season.

The Newcastle legend watched in disbelief as Watford totally outplayed United, with the home team second best in every area of the pitch.

Shearer couldn’t believe how the United defence were bullied all afternoon and as for the attacking threat…Alan Shearer summed it up ‘How on earth are you going to score a goal in this team?’

The Match of the Day pundit thought the team looked badly prepared and not up for the game, from the very moment they walked out with heads down to start the pre-match warm-up.

Gary Lineker:

‘Marvellous result for Watford but for your team…pretty inept really?’

Alan Shearer:

“Well before anybody has a pop at me, Watford were absolutely outstanding from start to finish, all over the park.

“Deeney and Ighalo were superb and dominated the Newcastle back four.”

Expect them to have a right go:

“Newcastle…this a Newcastle team that got absolutely battered from pundits and media alike on Monday at West Ham for being beaten 2-0.

“They are at home and you would expect them to come out, roll their sleeves up and have a right go.”

Looked at Newcastle and thought no chance:

“And I looked at Newcastle there and thought…no, no chance. There wasn’t enough there at all. He (Thauvin) turns up in a Tux – this is a serious business we are in here. That was funny on the first day of the season but it is not funny any more.

“Danny (Murphy) said that when they came out they didn’t look focused or prepared and that was for the warm-up!

Far too easy:

“A long ball up , as Watford did, he (Deeney) sits him (Coloccini) down and that is a sign of things to come. It is just far far too easy for Watford, as I said, they were brilliant…but they were helped by Newcastle’s shambolic defending at times.

“Haidara…get the ball up field – he is trying to nutmeg him (loses ball and leads to first goal.”

What was Coloccini doing?:

“Long ball up and as I say, he (Deeney) bullied them all afternoon. Coloccini…what is he doing? Deeney controls it and turns, Coloccini is seven yards off him, get tight on him! Lovely weighted pass (by Deeney) but just watch the way Ighalo runs off Mbemba, he doesn’t cover himself in glory either, jogging back.

“Unbelievable amount of space, just watch Nyom run past Thauvin, you might be able to do that in the French league but you can’t do this in the Premier League – you have to track back.”

Better going forward?:

“Were they any better going forward? No, they are not. How on earth are you going to score a goal in this team? The lack of quality was alarming, not on the same page Thauvin and Janmaat.

“From start to finish, I’m afraid Newcastle were abject. Really poor and big problems for the manager.”
