The players Steve McClaren should ‘rest’ for Tuesday’s cup-tie: Fan vote results
The first cup-tie of the new era and the question we asked yesterday was: Which Newcastle players should Steve McClaren ‘rest’ against Northampton?
Fielding weakened teams in the cups has become a major bone of contention for Newcastle fans but Mike Ashley claimed in May that the cup competitions were now being taken seriously.
Steve McClaren has also said that his ambition is to win a cup for the Newcastle fans.
So what kind of team do the fans think Newcastle should put out on Tuesday night?
A home game against League Two opposition should arguably not be a problem whichever team the Head Coach puts out. However, supporters will want him to make sure there are no slip-ups, whilst for some fans it will be a statement of intent when the team is named.
With only Sissoko and Dummett likely to be ruled out through injury and five new signings, including former Northampton striker Ivan Toney, United look to have far more credible options than previous seasons.
The bench on Saturday at Old Trafford contained:
Darlow, Williamson, Tiote, Aarons, de Jong, Thauvin, Cisse
With many supporters maybe even thinking that it would be a GOOD thing to make changes to include some/most of these players, plus Daryl Janmaat also comes into contention after suspension.
The Northampton match will be the fourth game in the space of 17 days, so just who did the supporters think Steve McClaren should leave out, if anybody…?
The votes are now counted and thank you for taking the time to give your opinion/votes.
The percentages of supporters who believed which players should be ‘rested’/left out were:
54% Wijnaldum
47% Krul
45% Coloccini
34% Colback
31% Obertan
26% Mbemba
26% Anita
19% Mitrovic
18% Nobody
13% Haidara
11% Taylor
8% Perez
As you can see, only 18% of the voting fans think Steve McClaren should play exactly the same team as at Old Trafford.
With the only player being Wijnaldum getting a clear majority of supporters thinking he should definitely be rested and kept for Arsenal on Saturday.
Though Krul and Coloccini are close to that majority figure, no doubt fans assuming that Darlow will probably be given a chance anyway, whilst maybe no bad thing to give Taylor and Mbemba a chance together in the middle, with Janmaat likely to play on the right after suspension.
Mitrovic has over four in five fans thinking he should play, Saturday was only his first start and Tuesday could be great opportunity to get a confidence giving first goal.
