Florian Thauvin looks to finally be about to join Newcastle after a number of near misses in previous transfer windows.
When joining both Lille and Marseille, Newcastle made offers for the winger but he elected to stay in France each time.
This summer transfer window has seen United once again linked repeatedly with the 22 year old and last night RMC in France, reported that Thauvin is set to join Newcastle with Remy Cabella set to go the other way on an initial loan with a permanent transfer price agreed if he plays a certain number of matches.
Monday morning sees L’equipe follow up the story and they report that Marseille are happy with Newcastle’s latest offer of 17m euros (approx £12m), after having turned down two previous lower offers.
However, they also say that Cabella is key to the deal and so far he hasn’t agreed to the move back to France.
Marseille have made a disastrous start to the season and are currently one of only three clubs with no points.
On the opening day they lost 1-0 at home to Caen and on Sunday lost by the same scoreline at Reims, both of those clubs finishing in the bottom half of Ligue 1 last season.
Marseille only qualified for the Europa League after a fourth place finish last season and are desperate to bounce back, having played Champions League in five of the previous seven seasons.
However, the lack of CL cash has meant they’ve had to cash in on star players Imbula and Payet to balance the books and are desperate to bring in new players themselves, especially after yesterday’s result.
Remy Cabella on loan would help to placate the fans and banking the Thauvin money would allow them to invest further.
