Steve McClaren to report: Who he wants to keep for new season
Steve McClaren was given the month of July to decide which players he wanted to keep and which he wanted to discard.
With the Chronicle reporting that now the Head Coach is due to meet Lee Charnley to discuss his findings, with McClaren looking for between 18 and 20 players to rely on from the current squad of players.

Whilst there is obviously talk of clean slates and everybody getting their chance, it is obvious to the vast majority of fans that there are a number of players who have already shown over a period of time that they don’t have what it takes.
Though equally, we have players who we all presume must be better than what they showed last season and the hope is the new United boss can get something better out of them.
“Now we’ll sit down and assess the squad, try to pick about 18 or 20 players.
“That’s who we will pick from, they’re the ones, and we will decide on where the others go – some will go out on loan, some we will try to sell – I think that conversation will come about very soon.”
Some have done really well…:
“I think the key thing is to come in and give everybody a chance, you look at everybody, I think that’s what we have done.
“Some players have done really well, some have disappointed….you’re finding out about people.”
Whilst you wouldn’t expect Steve McClaren to start hiring and firing as soon as he walked through the door, the fact remains that time is against us all, with the new season just a week away.
The consensus amongst fans was that at least half a dozen new players were needed this summer, not ones for the future but players who would be capable of playing first team football if selected, at least good enough for the bench and better than what we already had.
The three signings so far look good, at least on paper. So will the desire be there within the club to bring more in and more importantly, just how much influence/power has Steve McClaren got?
If he says it is essential certain other players come in, will it happen?
If that is dependent on being able to move out players who aren’t good enough then that is where we hit problems.
The likes of Sylvain Marveaux, Gabriel Obertan, Shane Ferguson and others, have obviously been available for some time but it is impossible to shift them, with their wages problematic compared to their ability, never mind if Newcastle expect a transfer fee.
There are a whole host of other players that many supporters would like to see replaced but it is very hard to see any other club taking the likes of Riviere, Anita, Gouffran, Williamson, Taylor, Elliot and the rest, with once again wages (compared to ability) a massive problem before you get to any transfer fee expected.
Who would you keep and who would you jettison? Interested to find out – leave your comments below please.
