Steve McClaren has revealed that he’s had a number of conversations with Fabricio Coloccini this summer, to see if the current Newcastle Captain is committed to the coming season.
According to the Newcastle Head Coach, Coloccini has said he wants to stay and end his career at St James Park.
Crystal Palace have been regularly linked with the Argentine defender but today Alan Pardew stated that he thinks he has little hope of attracting his former captain to Selhurst Park.
Colocciini has missed all seven on Newcastle’s pre season friendlies with what is said to be an Achilles problem.
Despite this, Steve McClaren hasn’t given up hope of the defender starting against Southampton, though he says that depends on how he trains this coming week.
“I have spoken to him several times, he’s coming to the end of his career and he wants to finish it here.
“I said great – that will do me. Let’s just get him on the field and playing now.”
Taking the club forward:
“He has got a year left on his contract and Newcastle is always his preferred choice.
“I know there is speculation but my indication is that he wants to stay here and take the club forward.”
Start against Southampton?:
“We will assess it and see how he trains.
“A lot of them still need work and we have to get that work in pretty quick.”
