Steve McClaren emerged positive from meetings with Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley, revealing that he has been told to tell the Managing Director what his needs are to improve the Newcastle team/squad.
The United Head Coach says that there is nothing concrete he can tell fans at the minute but that he is looking to further improve the group of players he can select from.
Many fans believed that any further spending this summer would depend on players also going out, a major signing in a similar vein to Mbemba, Mitrovic and Wijnaldum would be a big indication of things moving in the right direction IF no key player(s) left.
Think it is fair to say that the position on transfers at the moment, is that the three first team signings are better than anticipated, though on the other hand there haven’t been as many signings as supporters had hoped for.
A few injuries in key positions have crippled United at times in recent seasons and to avoid any potential repeat, further team strengthening is needed, so let’s hope Lee Charnley is all ears as Steve McClaren tells him what is needed.
This summer’s investment in players has given everybody a lift but after the failure by Mike Ashley to properly invest in past seasons, it means Newcastle are still playing catch-up despite the arrival of Wijnaldum, Mitrovic and Mbemba.
“I met Mike Ashley last week and he reiterated that he is taking a back seat, Lee (Charnley) is taking charge and we’re working well together.
“He says that it’s my job to tell him that ‘We need this or we need that to improve the squad’, we are also communicating a lot with Graham Carr. We have done that every week and we have been patient, we’ve got three in.”
Only if you the right players…
“Will there be any more? I don’t know but are we pursuing and are we looking? Of course we are. We are always looking to improve our team & squad but I can’t tell you anything concrete at this stage.
“You might say you can’t wait for it (transfer window) to close and for everything to settle down, but that is only if you get the right players – there are still a lot of things that can happen (before window closes).”
