Well did/is everyone having a good summer?
I had a splendid week in Tunisia, just before those dreadful events in Sousse, so it would seem writing about an early season crisis at St James Park is somewhat trifling.
While things have changed in NE1 the results and performances are still well below what they should be.
Before the West Ham game, the elusive pimpernel appeared on TV and said what we all wanted to hear; investment, a trophy and a top 4 finish, these are now the targets!
So, a new manager and coaching team, what did they bring?
Well there is no doubt we have signed three absolutely quality players, the problem is we needed six, and while Steve McClaren is saying the right things, we are still some way short of where I hoped we would be.
What about the action so far and what next? Encouraging against Southampton until we alarmingly ran out of steam after 70 minutes, second rate against Swansea from minute 1 to 90,
Never mind, it’s only Manchester United and Arsenal next!
As I write there could be another incomer very soon, and another signing of quality at that, but my worry is he could stifle the progress of Rolando Aarons. I would prefer McClaren to go and buy a dominant centre half and perhaps let Rolando Aarons, Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez loose on the Premier League.
For all Obertan’s promise after his sensational cross against Southampton, we should not forget he is and always has been, simply another Wayne Fereday. He is another who is stifling the progress of others both younger and better, step aside now please.
It is also sad to say but captain Colo does now look way beyond his sell by date and in all honesty has done for a while now.
I want to remember him as the classy player he was, he does still have the skill but is now far too slow – take a look at the Swansea second goal, he was simply to slow to get near his man.
He was never the quickest of players anyway but his mind now seems just as slow, his reactions simply are not there!
Is it just me, or was Tim Krul at fault for the second goal, it went right over his head, ok I’m being a bit picky.
There is a lot of negativity around and so far I think I have added to it, however the plus side is that there is promise for sure. Once the new players fully gel I feel there could be an opportunity to progress , but we need to act now and get a dominant centre half through the door – John Terry anyone?
So what would Florian Thauvin bring? Well the YouTube montage suggests he is a mixture of Laurent Robert and Hatem Ben Arfa, with a turn of pace, an ability to beat a man with ease and seemingly tasty just outside the box with free kicks.
However, these montages always only highlight the good and not the average, that said he will be a welcome addition despite what I said earlier…
Maybe there is room for both him and Aarons in the starting 11, hopefully they can provide the service that Mitrovic needs?
It’s not all doom and gloom despite a difficult start to the season, there is much promise and if we can get a decent CH through the door on top of who we have already got, then I will be quietly confident that we can climb the table quickly.
The league cup has as expected been sensibly priced by NUFC so an opportunity to get your kids along (£5 is fair). If, as we have been promised, we really are going to give the cups a go then a strong team should be on the park, I await with bated breath on that one.
So what has the premier league delivered so far? Not a great amount in my eyes
Well the refereeing is still awful, Bournemouth were robbed on Monday night by the ref – who happens to be in charge of our game this weekend, so don’t expect any favours!
Jose Mourhino is on the verge of losing his rocker and yes we are above Chelsea as I type. You could not have scripted the injuries against Man City only one week after the hissy fit against his medical staff!
Sunderland are threatening to be really poor again this season and many of their fans and so called experts have already written them off!
Oh yes, and Alan Pardew is still the most sickly self congratulating individual in the history of the premier league(needed that one off my chest ).
Mark my words, it’s only a matter of time before Bolasie is given the HBA treatment!
