Newcastle United 4 Northampton Town 1   Tuesday 25 August 7.45pm

Newcastle: Thauvin 3, de Jong 8, Janmaat 56, Williamson 63

Northampton: Richards 10 (pen)

It might only have been the League Cup second round but Florian Thauvin made it a memorable night.

Making his first start for United and on his home debut, the French winger dazzled the 26,000+ who were inside St James Park.

Mind you, thousands were still queuing outside at kick-off and many arrived in their seats to see the score was 1-0…1-1…2-1!

The third minute saw Haidara’s deep cross reach Thauvin and he made no mistake with a far post volley (watch it here).

Five minutes later and the former Marseille winger turned provider, his free-kick glanced in by Siem de Jong.

However, Northampton then went straight up the other end and a Tiote handball saw the ref point to the spot and Marc Richards scored the penalty – 2-1 after only 10 minutes.

Things became a little calmer after that frenzy of early action although Darlow had to save well as the visitors threatened to level things, although de Jong and Perez had further chances before the break.

However, 11 minutes into the second period and Thauvin picked up his second assist, with Janmaat firing home inside the box.

The Frenchman completing his night’s work with another excellent free-kick that even Mike Williamson couldn’t miss at the back post.

Northampton were then let off from further punishment as Thauvin was instantly substituted to a standing ovation, Steve McClaren keeping him fresh for Arsenal on Saturday.

Replacement Aleksandar Mitrovic couldn’t find a first Newcastle goal of his own but the night belonged to Florian Thauvin.

The draw saw Newcastle pull out another home tie, facing Sheffield Wednesday, as Sunderland get Manchester City at home.
