Remy Cabella first interview since return to France – Talks about Newcastle and Thauvin

Remy Cabella has given his first big interview since returning to France.

The Newcastle winger was part of the deal that took Florian Thauvin to St James Park.

Thauvin transferred for a reported £13m fee, whilst Remy Cabella is on a year’s loan and a permanent deal for around £6m will be triggered once he plays a certain number of games.

This first big Remy Cabella interview was published on Tuesday night by RMC, perfectly timed as only minutes/hours later, Florian Thauvin turned in a scintillating home debut – scoring one and making the other three, before being substituted after 65 minutes.

This followed Saturday’s short cameo as a substitute, with Thauvin inches away from scoring the winner at Old Trafford.

All eyes are now on the team selection for Saturday, with a tough assignment against Arsenal, a club that Newcastle have a shocking set of statistics against in recent years.

Cabella himself had a happy start on his return to Ligue 1, getting an assist for one of the goals as Marseille trounced Troyes 6-0 at the weekend.

Here are a few selected snippets from the RMC interview with Remy Cabella:

Happy with this return to France and arriving in Marseille?

Oh yes, I’m very happy. Especially with the game Sunday and we got this victory (beat Troyes 6-0). Every reason to be happy.

How did your transfer happen?

It’s been a few years since OM (Marseille) were after me and the president wanted me. I have not had the opportunity to go there because Montpellier would not let me. And when I had the opportunity to go, OM did not make the offer they wanted (but Newcastle did). This year the opportunity arose. I had the president on the phone and I was convinced by the project.

Did you also want to come back to find playing time for the Euros in France in June?

My choice was not made in relation to that. My choice was first made to discover the taste of football and enjoy my football. I know I can find that at OM. For now, I have had one game but it was great. First I want to focus 100% on my club and enjoy my football and if the France team is to come, it will come.

Are you disappointed not to have had enough playing time in Newcastle?

There have been ups and downs. It is an experience, a year in which I learned a lot. Now I am here and I am the happiest. I will give 100% and do everything to play all matches.

For some, Ligue 1 has weakened this summer but we also see a lot of players coming back. Why all the returns?

This is football. These are choices. For me, OM is a great club and I decided to play for Marseille. Many players come back and that’s good for the (French) championship, it’s a little up the level.

Florian Thauvin left OM for Newcastle. Has he the characteristics to be successful there?

I think he can succeed. He will play left midfield or right midfield and that is the position where the coach was looking for someone. He has the qualities to win but it will take a little time as it takes time to adapt to England. He must also get along with the players and integrate with the team. It takes time.
