The Newcastle Head Coach has confirmed that he expects no new signings before the season starts, also saying that he will pick 18-20 players to make up his Newcastle squad from those he currently has.

Steve McClaren revealing that this key group is who he will rely on and then once he has chosen them, he will look to move on as many of the rest as possible.
“Now we’ll sit down and assess the squad, try to pick about 18 or 20 players.
“That’s who we will pick from, they’re the ones, and we will decide on where the others go – some will go out on loan, some we will try to sell – I think that conversation will come about very soon.”
Some have done really well…:
“I think the key thing is to come in and give everybody a chance, you look at everybody, I think that’s what we have done.
“Some players have done really well, some have disappointed….you’re finding out about people.”
The question is though, which 20 players should McClaren select to make up his Newcastle squad.
Well like the rest of you, I have been watching this group of players longer than the new Newcastle Head Coach and so I will give him the benefit of my judgement, feel free to give yours in the comments section below.
I have managed to find 16 players who I am excited/happy/ok (though I still have reservations even with some ofthese – Colo’s commitment, Tiote’s commitment/injury, never really seen Darlow, hoping Cabella comes good etc etc) about, here they are listed in my order of preference, starting with the three new signings and then going on to the players who have been signed up a little longer:
Siem de Jong
My choice would be for at least four more new signings to make it up to the 20 strong Newcastle squad. However, if I was pushed then I would add these four to make up the 20
It may be a but harsh on Jamaal Lascelles but he has looked shocking in the pre season matches I have seen, whilst with most of the rest of the squad (Good is permanently injured and Satka doesn’t look to have it despite the limited chances he has had) I have seen more than enough to tell me that they don’t have a Premier League future.
Jamaal Lascelles, Haris Vuckic, Emmanuel Riviere, Mike Williamson, Vurnon Anita, Sylvain Marveaux, Curtis Good, Shane Ferguson, Gael Bigirimana, Lubomir Satka, Yoan Gouffran, Gabriel Obertan, Rob Elliot
(***Adam Armstrong, Sammy Ameobi and Freddie Woodman aren’t included as they are out on loan.)
