Olivier Giroud explains why he can’t wait to play for Arsenal against Newcastle once again
Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud can’t wait for Saturday to come and the chance to face Newcastle once again.
Whilst Newcastle fans may lick their lips at what Aleksandar Mitrovic could potentially do to a makeshift Arsenal centre-back pairing, at the other end of the pitch there are alarm bells going off all over the place.
Olivier Giroud and his team may not have had the best of starts with only four points out of nine this season, but if past performance plays a part, both Giroud and his side will be filling their boots at St James Park.
The striker has only started six games against Newcastle and scored a remarkable (disastrous for United) eight goals.
The only time he failed to score when facing NUFC, was when he came on for Podolski as a 78th minute substitute back on 19 May 2013…needless to say Arsenal still won that game.
In fact the Gunners have won the seven in a row against Newcastle, with only one defeat in 19 clashes and two in 30, a truly horrendous set of stats for United.
As for Olivier Giroud, this is his personal record against Newcastle:
2012/13 Arsenal 7 Newcastle 3 (Giroud scores 2)
2012/13 Newcastle 0 Arsenal 1 (Giroud 78th minute sub)
2013/14 Newcastle 0 Arsenal 1 (Giroud scores 1)
2013/14 Arsenal 3 Newcastle 0 (Giroud scores 1)
2014/15 Arsenal 4 Newcastle 1 (Giroud scores 2)
2014/15 Newcastle1 Arsenal 2 (Giroud scores 2)
Speaking to the official Arsenal website, Olivier Giroud had this to say:
“Obviously you want to continue the good momentum, for me it (playing Newcastle) will be a bit special, but the main thing is to return to London with the three points.
“I am not going to say (why he does well against Newcastle) because then there are no more secrets – I need to keep them for me! It is maybe luck or I don’t know, but I really want to keep scoring against them and help the team win the three points”
Never easy to play there…:
“It doesn’t matter who scores, but if it is me I will be really happy because it is always nice for a striker to score.
“We need the win, so we will go there with a big motivation before the international break. It is never easy to play there, even if we have been successful in the last games against them, especially there. We are aware it is going to be a tough game and we need to be at 100 per cent.”
