As well as the defeat at Swansea and Daryl Janmaat’s red card and subsequent suspension, Moussa Sissoko has also picked up an injury.
In a bad couple of minutes for Newcastle, Janmaat got his marching orders and then Steve McClaren’s rearranged team saw Vurnon Anita drop to right-back.
Instantly, Janmaat’s tormentor, Jefferson Montero, left Anita for dead as he easily outpaced him, with Moussa Sissoko running back to cover his teammate.
However, after making the intervention, the Frenchman instantly pulled up, holding his thigh.
McClaren left things until half-time which was only a minute or two away, then rearranged things again with Moussa Sissoko forced off with his injury and Steven Taylor coming on.
Mbemba coming across to try and counteract Montero, Anita moving back into midfield and Taylor alongside Coloccini.
The Newcastle Head Coach has now said that they are waiting to find out how bad the injury is:
“Then on top of that (defeat and Janmaat red card) we have got Sissoko with a groin strain and we don’t know how serious that is.”
Moussa Sissoko used his Twitter account to comment on the injury as well, plus thanking people for enquiring about his injury and those offering birthday greetings (he’s turned 26 today – Sunday)
“Little pain on the adductor during the game. At rest until Monday. Thank you for your messages friends! #NUFC”
With one point from the first six, it was always going to be a hard match at Old Trafford and now Newcastle have to go there without the only specialist right-back and almost certainly, Sissoko as well.
It will be interesting to see if Steve McClaren tries to go like for like or takes the opportunity to change his formation as well.
