Latest: Newcastle officials now in Marseille to finalise £13m Thauvin deal
Newcastle United officials are currently in Marseille to finalise the transfer of Florian Thauvin.
In a deal set to be worth around £13m, after negotiations are completed today, the winger will fly back with the NUFC delegation.
Sky Sports’ man in the north east has confirmed the ‘action’ in France in a Twitter message this Tuesday afternoon:
“A delegation from #NUFC currently in Marseille to meet Florian Thauvin and escort him to Newcastle later today. Closing in on £13m deal.”
This morning we brought you reports from French newspaper La Provence, which stated that the 22 year old winger was expected to agree terms today and complete a medical on Wednesday.
They also repored that their information was that Remy Cabella will be making a trip in the opposite direction today, travelling to Marseille’s training ground for discussions on a loan deal with a view to a permanent deal at the end of the season.
That seems to be backed up by Newcastle fan and Sky Sports presenter Pete Graves, revealing this morning that Remy Cabella had left Newcastle’s training ground early – the implication being that he is on his way.
Fees of around 17m euros (plus 3m euros extra depending on hitting targets) for Florian Thauvin and 9m euros (at the end of the season’s loan) for Remy Cabella are said to have been agreed between the clubs.
In their coverage of the impending double transfer, L’equipe claim Newcastle have been trying to get rid of Remy Cabella throughout this summer transfer window.
After losing out of contract Andre Ayew to Swansea for nothing, as well as having to sell stars such as Imbula and Payet for a combined £25m+, Marseille were only able to bring in relatively budget signings as they have no Champions League cash coming in this season.
Worse was to follow as Marseille lost their opening league match to lowly Caen at home and manager Marcelo Bielsa instantly resigned.
This was followed by a second defeat at Reims, leaving Marseille as one of only three clubs with no points.
Yet to appoint a replacement, the French media report that one big question Remy Cabella wants answered before he commits, is who will be be the new manager he will be playing under.
Newcastle have been credited with interest for some years and it looks as though finally Florian Thauvin could be making the move to Tyneside, encouraged by a reported six year contract according to La Provence, which would see the French winger earn over £40,000 a week. An even more attractive deal when taking into account the higher taxes for big earners in France.
United are clearly in need of extra creativity and goals, with Thauvin certainly a talented player but also widely seen as a difficult player to manage….
