Gateshead beat Newcastle in Ivan Toney trial match behind closed doors
Ivan Toney arrived at St James Park this week and trained with the younger players in the development squad as part of a trial before you buy.
It was reported that a match had been arranged behind closed doors for a Newcastle eleven against Gateshead to take place today (1pm kick-off), to assist in making a decision as to whether to sign the Northampton striker.
A fee of £500,000 including performance related add-ons has been speculated, fitting in with previous claims of a potential fee of around £300,000 plus extra money later based on appearances etc.
Ivan Toney was pictured in the crowd at yesterday’s friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach, as United went down 1-0 to the Bundesliga outfit.
The behind closed doors game has taken place but still no confirmation that Ivan Toney took part.
No word at all so far from Newcastle United about the match but Gateshead have put a match report up on their website, though it only lists the Gateshead team and no mention of Toney during proceedings.
According to the Heed website, their team were well on top throughout most of the game with Josh Gillies putting them ahead on 12 minutes, former Newcastle midfielder Mattie Pattison with the assist.
In the 56th minute Newcastle scored their goal with Callum Roberts, who was on loan briefly at Gateshead last season, setting up Alex Gilliead.
Newcastle then failed to clear a corner properly and when the ball was once again delivered into the box, Nathan Buddle scored the winner.
